What the Heck is a Crit?
A crit (short for critique) is an intentional, artist-led conversation centred on critical engagement with artwork. It’s not about advice-giving or fixing; it’s about interpreting what’s already there. Crits explore the work’s effect in the world, not just the artist’s intention.
Whether formal or experimental, crits challenge us to slow down, listen deeply, and expand our thinking through shared dialogue.
What Was The Crit Collective?
The Crit Collective (2024) was an open critique group for artists in Gloucestershire, founded by Jo Hepburn. It offered a flexible, informal format for peer feedback, research discussion, and critical reflection, outside of institutional frameworks.
It became a vital meeting point for artists working across disciplines.
Hosted at The Wilson, Cheltenham once a month, the sessions were open, free, and non-hierarchical. The focus: what’s the work doing, and how can we understand it together?
What is 87a CRITS?
87a CRITS is the current iteration of the Collective: a six-month pilot programme for a small, selected group of artists, meeting monthly in Jo’s Cheltenham studio-home.
It’s not drop-in, it’s cohort-based, more focused, and builds deeper connections through sustained critique and collaboration.
Who Is This For?
Artists working with research, risk, or conceptual depth. Whether you’re self-taught or degree-trained, this is for you if you're seeking serious engagement with your work, your materials, and your role as an artist today.
