What the Heck is a Crit?

A crit (short for critique) is a collaborative, artist-led discussion focused on critically engaging with artwork. It’s not about offering quick fixes or telling someone what their work could be- it’s about responding to what is there. Artists come together to interpret, reflect on, and question the work in front of them, considering what the work is doing when it’s shared beyond the studio.

Crits aren’t rigid or formulaic. They can be playful, experimental, and unconventional, but always intentional. The goal is to challenge and expand our understanding of the work, fostering deeper connections with our practice and each other.

What is The Crit Collective?

The Crit Collective is an alternative, artist-driven cohort based in Gloucestershire, focused on creating a space for critical reflection and honest dialogue about art.

This isn’t just a group of artists sharing work- it’s a research space. We approach critique with a focus on material, process, and the ontological aspects of art-making. We’re driven by the belief that art has its own agency, and that the act of critique is about finding out what the work is doing when it meets an audience.

The goal is not to judge but to engage, question, and discover. There’s no hierarchy—every artist is a colleague, a peer.

We offer a platform that exists outside formal educational structures. It's for those who are committed to exploring their art and pushing boundaries- not for those seeking validation or commercial gain.

Who is This For?

The Crit Collective is for artists who want to explore, experiment, and grow their work in a supportive, engaged, and forward-thinking environment. We welcome anyone who is dedicated to their practice and ready to think critically about what they create. If you’re driven by artistic integrity and a desire for meaningful feedback, this is the space for you.

Do I Need to Book?

No, just show up when you’re ready. However, letting us know in advance helps us plan the session and make sure there’s time for everyone to share their work.

Just email: johepburnart@outlook.com if you wish to attend.

Do I Need to Bring Work to be Critiqued?

No. While sharing your work can be valuable, you’re welcome to attend just to listen, contribute to discussions, and reflect on others’ work. Critiquing isn’t only about presenting- it’s also about learning through engaging with different perspectives.

What Kind of Work Can I Bring?

Anything you’re working on- finished or in progress. Sculpture, painting, performance ideas, sketches, etc. The focus isn’t on perfection but on exploring what the work is doing and how it’s developing.

How do I Prepare For a Crit?

Bring your work, an open mind, and a willingness to engage. You can introduce your work with a brief context, but remember- the focus is on what the work is doing, not just what you intended.
