FAQs

What the Heck is a Crit?

A crit (short for critique) is an intentional, artist-led conversation centred on critical engagement with artwork. It’s not about advice-giving or fixing; it’s about interpreting what’s already there. Crits explore encountering work in the world, not just the artist’s intention. Whether formal or experimental, crits challenge us to slow down, attune, and expand our thinking through shared dialogue.

What is The Crit Collective?

The Crit Collective is an evolving artist-led initiative founded by Jo Hepburn, dedicated to building critical culture, artistic community, and meaningful exchange in Gloucestershire.

What began in 2024 as an open monthly critique group has grown into a broader platform for artists seeking critical conversation, peer support, and sustained engagement with contemporary practice. Rooted in a rural context but outward-looking in ambition, The Crit Collective creates opportunities for artists to gather, share work, challenge ideas, and develop lasting connections.

Programmes such as 87a CRITS sit within this wider framework, offering more focused spaces for critique and dialogue. Together, these activities contribute to a growing network of artists committed to serious engagement with contemporary practice.

The Crit Collective is not defined by a fixed structure. It continues to evolve in response to the needs of artists, creating the kinds of conversations, communities, and opportunities that help practices thrive.

What is 87a CRITS?

87a CRITS is the current iteration of the Collective: a six-month pilot programme for a small, selected group of artists, meeting monthly in a Cheltenham studio. It’s not drop-in, it’s cohort-based, more focused, and builds deeper connections through sustained critique and collaboration.

Who Is This For?

Practicing Artists. Whether you’re self-taught or degree-trained, this is for you if you're seeking serious engagement with your work, your materials, and your role as an artist today.
